In track and field, the responsibilities that face a head coach can be quite demanding. In your opinion, how vital is it to the head coach, the athletes and the team to have a strong group of assistant coaches in place to ensure overall success?

For our track program, it's very important to have a good, strong and knowledgeable coaching staff because you rely upon them to help the student-athletes in the different aspects of the events. One person can't do it all. There are 16 events in Indiana high school track and field. You need assistance to help you oversee, instruct and coordinate, especially when it comes time for a track meet. You really rely on your assistant coaches to help facilitate the success of the team. It's a coordinated effort.

It's huge because track is so spread out. A head coach can't get around everywhere. I'm blessed here at Lawrence Central to have several assistant coaches with a great mixture of backgrounds including college runners and people that have been coaching for a long time. We have a good mix. The division of labor is a great thing.

It's key. It's the success to any good team. It's about the kind of people you surround yourself with. In the years where we've been able to be really successful, it's not just been because we have had talented kids. It's because we have good coaches that are dedicated and love what they do. They stay late and show up early. They do everything in their power to make sure the kids do well. You definitely need a key core of good assistants. It's vital.

In any sport, assistants are extremely vital because of their specialty that they bring to the team. As the years go and you become a head coach, things can mount up. There are some responsibilities you just have to delegate, so it’s important that you have a good, quality staff that can delegate things, too. Hopefully, they can grow with you, the team, and adapt to the team philosophy and make it work. You wouldn’t hire them if they didn’t bring something to the team. That’s the most important thing.
