Butterfield Chosen for USA Football Junior Team

Thursday, May 14, 2009

Lake Hamilton quarterback Phillip Butterfield recently earned a spot on the USA Football Junior Team. Forty-five graduating seniors, who will play for 33 different college programs, earned the spots after being nominated by high school and college coaches. Butterfield, who signed with Arkansas State, joins players that inked with programs like Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan State Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Baylor and others.

USA Football, the sport’s national governing body on youth and amateur levels, has built America’s first junior national team in the sport to compete in the eight-nation, four-continent 2009 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Junior World Championship in Canton, Ohio, from June 27-July 5. National football teams from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand and Sweden have qualified to join the United States to pursue the sport’s first world championship on the international junior level (19 and under).

Butterfield committed to Tulsa after his junior season but signed with Arkansas State in February. The two-time all-stater led the Wolves to back-to-back 6A State Championship Games, including last year’s win against El Dorado.

Butterfield passed for more than 2,700 yards and 23 touchdowns last fall and became the school’s all-time passing leader. He earned MVP honors of the state-title game and was the Little Rock Touchdown Club’s 6A Player of the Year.

The only other quarterback on the roster is Bryce Petty (Midlothian, Texas), who signed with Baylor. Petty, a three-year starter, had offers from Arkansas, Nebraska, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.

Cleveland St. Ingatius High School coach Chuck Lyle will coach the team. He’s engineered two USA Today “national championships” at
