Thursday, July 2, 2009

TULSA and FAYETTEVILLE —VYPE has announced its second annual Select 7-on-7 Tournament on July 17-18 at the University of Arkansas.

Forty-plus teams from across the region will gather to compete in a passing-only, 7-on-7, high school football competition. This two-day event will see the best passing teams from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana and a number of other regions compete for a chance to be crowned national champions.

“McDonald’s is a proud sponsor of events that promote a healthy, active lifestyle for high school kids,” said Bill Mathews, owner of McDonald's Restaurants in more than 30 locations in Northwest Arkansas and the presenting sponsor of the tournament. “Our partnership with VYPE enables us to reach a key target audience and participate in an event that celebrates the accomplishments of our local high school athletes.”

“This an exciting event for us, as it gives high school football players, coaches, fans and family from around the region a taste of serious competition before the season starts up,” said Mike Capshaw, VYPE Arkansas Editor. “The unique format of 7-on-7 games has brought a high level of competition to the tournament and it will again be fun and entertaining for everybody involved.”

The tournament will begin in a pool play format with eight teams per pool playing each other one time. Based on performance in pool play, each team will be seeded in a single-elimination playoff for a shot at the national title. Over the course of the two-day event, more than 200 games will be played with each team p[laying a minimum of eight games.

All games will be played on the University of Arkansas campus, leveraging top-notch facilities and giving each player a unique opportunity to get a taste of big-time, Division-I football.

The faster-paced 7-on-7 games are played on 40-yard fields with the offense having three downs to make a first down every 15 yards on its way to the end zone. The quarterback only has four seconds to make a throw and only forward passes are allowed There is also no rushing, tackling or timeouts, unless there's an injury.

“We are creating a one-of-a-kind national tournament for high school players and giving them a chance to play at a major university,” added Kenyatta Wright, Sr. Director of Strategic Development for VYPE. “It’s going to be very exciting to see all of these great teams and talented young players competing at the highest level on a very big stage.”
