Butterfield Leads Lake Hamilton To Title

Monday, June 16, 2008

Wolves upend Shiloh Christian in semifinals while being led by quarterback Philip Butterfield and receiver Josh Proffit Lake Hamilton won the fourth Annual Shootout of the South 7-on-7 Tournament Saturday afternoon with an improbable 38-37 victory against Allen (Texas) High. Wolves senior quarterback Phillip Butterfield hit classmate Tauno Vannucci on a two-point conversion pass with no time left to complete the upset at Mighty Blue Bird Field outside of Little Rock. Allen controlled the game when they took a 37-30 lead with 12 seconds remaining on a six-yard touchdown pass. Allen could have milked the clock by going for the two-point conversion instead of taking the automatic point after. However, Eagle players ran to the sideline and celebrated. Butterifield hurriedly assembled his troops at the line of scrimmage and uncorked a 40-yard bomb that senior receiver Josh Proffit pulled away from three defenders. The Wolves went for two points and the win. Allen, who won the tourney in 2006, finished pool play 6-0 and advanced to the finals with a 41-23 win over Shiloh Christian. Lake Hamilton struggled to a 2-3-1 pool play record Friday but beat defending champion Oklahoma City Heritage Hall 29-13 in the semifinals. Proffit earned top receiver honors for the tournament. The Wolves, who won the FCA state 7-on-7 Tournament last year, qualified for the National Select 7-on-7 Tournament July 24-26 at Hoover, Ala. Lake Hamilton plays in the VYPE Select Tournament on July 11 and 12 when the Wolves try for their third straight tournament title after winning the Sonic Air Raid title last week.
