If you're a high school baseball fan (outside of Grapevine's hopefuls), you're no doubt in shock to find the top-ranked Coppell Cowboys already out of the playoffs.
How did this happen? After winning 13 straight games, the Cowboys entered the first round of the playoffs in a mini-slump, losing its last two games.
A pair of late-season losses for a team that clinched its district title long, long ago isn't unusual, but more important is HOW the Cowboys lost those games.
The Cowboys' talented batting lineup managed only one run in losses to Lewisville and Flower Mound, then couldn't manage a run (on just four hits) off Grapevine starter Mason Melotakis. Throw in an uncharacteristically wild first inning from Coppell ace Zack Hermans and the Cowboys were down 2-0 after one inning.
The one-game playoff format didn't help a deep Coppell team that otherwise would have had at least one more shot at Grapevine in a best-of-three game series.
