An intrepid VYPER who made the trip to Round Rock for the UIL state baseball tournament reports:

Lufkin just put a dramatic end to its Class 5A semifinal with Pearland by hitting a game-winning two-run homer in the 12th inning.

Lufkin barely survived a Pearland rally in the top of the inning, escaping a bases-loaded situation.

A one-out suicide squeeze bunt ended Azle's state title hopes in a 4A semifinal.

Angleton's Madisyn Ward laid down the bunt with one out in the bottom of the ninth, scoring Gabby Banda from third base for a 1-0 victory.

Banda led off the ninth with a popup that fell safe when Azle's second baseman and shortstop collided.

Azle pitcher Sarah Mendez allowed just two hits and struck out 17 in the loss.

We're getting closer to revealing our pick as the area's No. 1 high school sports dynasty on VYPE.com/DFW.

I've been surprised that this list of schools and sports hasn't generate more heated debate so far.

Guess we pretty much nailed 'em. Or did we?

If you're a high school baseball fan (outside of Grapevine's hopefuls), you're no doubt in shock to find the top-ranked Coppell Cowboys already out of the playoffs.

How did this happen? After winning 13 straight games, the Cowboys entered the first round of the playoffs in a mini-slump, losing its last two games.

A pair of late-season losses for a team that clinched its district title long, long ago isn't unusual, but more important is HOW the Cowboys lost those games.

The Cowboys' talented batting lineup managed only one run in losses to Lewisville and Flower Mound, then couldn't manage a run (on just four hits) off Grapevine starter Mason Melotakis. Throw in an uncharacteristically wild first inning from Coppell ace Zack Hermans and the Cowboys were down 2-0 after one inning.

The one-game playoff format didn't help a deep Coppell team that otherwise would have had at least one more shot at Grapevine in a best-of-three game series.
